Bob Casey Says He Has No Concerns About Biden’s Ability To Serve Until 2029

Democratic senator Bob Casey (Pa.) said Tuesday he supports President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign and has no concerns about the octogenarian’s ability to serve another four years in office.

“Do you support keeping Biden at the top of the ticket?” CNN’s Manu Raju asked Casey.

“I’ve said so numerous times,” Casey replied.

“You don’t have any concerns about his ability to serve four more years?”

“No,” Casey said.

If Biden wins reelection and completes a second term, he will be 86 years old by the time he leaves office in January 2029. The prospects for both of those scenarios have dimmed after a series of public stumbles, capped by Biden’s disastrous debate performance against former president Donald Trump last month.

While many battleground-state Democrats have either called on Biden to suspend his campaign or refused to endorse him, Casey has stayed by his fellow Scrantonite. Sen. Jon Tester (D., Mont.) on Monday said Biden needs to “prove” he’s able to serve as president. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) on Friday backed out of a scheduled campaign appearance with Biden. By contrast, Casey greeted Biden at the Philadelphia airport on Sunday and attended a church service in the city later that day.

Casey’s continued support for the ailing president could prove a political liability in the Keystone State, where Casey faces one of the toughest campaigns of his career. Vulnerable Democrats have expressed concern that voters’ concerns about Biden will prove a drag on down-ballot Democrats. While Casey leads Republican businessman Dave McCormick in most polls, Biden now trails Trump by several points in Pennsylvania, which Biden narrowly won in 2020.

“You saw [Biden] at the debate stage,” Raju said to Casey.

“My job is not to be a commentator and analyst,” Casey replied. “I’ve got a job to do as a United States senator.”
